Under the top cover of your softener, you'll find the valve head, which contains a rotating cam. This cam plays a key role in controlling the softeners functions. Read below to learn more.
During a recharge cycle, the cam spins, indicating which stage it's in. The top of the cam has letters to signify each stage. If you take the top cover of your softener off and look down, you should be able to see which position it's in. It may be helpful to use a flashlight. Below, you'll find two examples - one with a plastic cam and gear cover and the other with a metal cover.
S - Service (Normal flow, not recharging)
F - Fill (1st stage of recharge)
Br - Brine (2nd stage of recharge)
Bk - Backwash (3rd stage of recharge)
R - Rinse (4th and final stage of recharge)
