'Shocking' your well is a standard practice to remove any unwanted bacteria or contaminants. We recommend that you reach out to your local water filtration department for instructions on this procedure. We can share how to prepare your softener for a well shock, though! Follow the simple instructions below.
1. You'll need to bypass your softener. This will protect the resin media and prevent debris and contaminants from entering the unit. Push the handle on the back of the unit IN.
If you have a blending valve, make sure it's closed so no hard water is coming through. Refer to What is a Blending Valve for instructions.
2. Once the bleach has sat in your well for the prescribed period, you'll need to run cold water (ideally an outdoor hose or spigot) until the bleach odor is gone, and the water tests safe.
3. After the water is confirmed safe, pull the bypass handle back OUT on the softener to return to normal service flow. If you have a blending valve, you can adjust it back now.
