In a water softener, the resin (small beads) are an important piece to reducing hardness minerals from the water and they work hard everyday to soften your water. The resin is inside the mineral tank and isn’t easily visible. In this case, you may be wondering, “If I can’t see it, how will I know when the resin is old or expired?” Read on as we identify why it can expire.
Why can resin expire?
- Age – the average lifespan for a water softener unit is around 10 years.
- Oxidation – it physically breaks down.
- Expansion – it expands in the tank.
If your resin is expired, there would be a pressure drop in the tank, leading to low water pressure in your home. You may also notice a pinch of it in the back of a toilet because the resin can escape from the tank into your plumbing. If you have a significant amount of resin getting into your plumbing with a new system though, you should Contact Us.
If you do have expired or old resin and your unit is close to the average life span of 10 years, you may want to consider replacing the whole unit.
