Our water softeners work through a process called ion exchange. During a regeneration cycle, they capture those hardness ions and swap them out for sodium or potassium ions. This is important because it helps balance your water back to a neutral state. This means that your softened water will have just a small amount of sodium or potassium, depending on the type of salt you choose to use.
AMOUNT OF SODIUM / POTASSIUM ADDED PER GALLON
Initial Water Hardness | Sodium Added | Potassium Added
GPG | PPM | Milligrams/gallon | Milligrams/gallon |
10 | 85.5 | 298 mg |
506 mg |
20 | 256.5 | 596 mg | 1012 mg |
30 | 427.5 | 894 mg | 1518 mg |
40 | 598.5 | 1,191 mg | 2024 mg |
AMOUNT OF SODIUM / POTASSIUM IN FOOD

Bread | 2 slices | 200-400 mg
Soda | 12 oz | 30-60 mg | |
Milk | 8 oz | 100-130 mg | 300-400 mg |
