The Tank Neck is the connection point between your valve head and resin tank. The neck houses important O-ring seals and other internal parts.
1. Bypass the water softener by pushing the handle in on the back of your unit. This will stop water from coming in or out of the softener while you work:
2. Depressurize the unit by running a Recharge cycle. Hold the Recharge button until the motor starts to spin, and then release. You will see ‘Recharge Now’ or ‘Recharging’ flashing on the screen.
3. Tap the recharge button once. This will advance the motor and move the valve to the next position.
4. Repeat Step 3 until the ‘Recharge Now’ or ‘Recharging’ disappears from the screen.
5. You can now gently pull one side of the black plastic c-clip away from the softener, and slowly roll it towards the other side of the c-clip to remove (pictured below).
***If the clips are still not easy to remove, they may be bound because the system is not completely level. Slowly and gently rock the softener back and forth slightly while applying pressure to the c-clip as described above to free them.
6. Gently pull the softener away from the bypass assembly and unplug the power cord.
7. Remove the top cover:
a. On the back of the unit, unhook the two clips that hold the cover onto the tank below (Figure 1). Flex/pull the cover out and away from the softener at these clips.
b. There are two similar clips holding the front of the cover on as well. Slide the cover towards you to release these clips, being careful not to disconnect any wires. (Figure 2). It is normal for the plastic cover to produce some noise as it shifts and bends.
8. On the underside of the cover, remove the red plastic connector with 5 wires.
9. Locate the black rectangular motor on the softener. There are thick black and red wires attached to the right side of the motor. Follow these wires and disconnect them at the white/clear plastic connector.
10. Remove the two large white clamps from the neck of the valve body, by releasing the clips that hold them together (pictured below).
11. Place a hand on each side of the main valve head and wiggle it loose, pulling straight up and off. The wiggle motion will loosen the valve head from the tube beneath it. This will allow you to view the tank neck and O-rings.
Reassembling
When you are ready to reassemble, reverse the steps from above. Here's a quick breakdown:
- Confirm all O-rings are lubricated and in place. The small O-ring on the center riser tube should sit about 1/4 inch from the top of the tube.
- Push the valve head straight back down onto the riser tube, and reconnect the clamps and clips around the tank neck.
- Confirm the O-rings on the bypass valve are lubricated and in place.
- Slide the valve head back onto the bypass valve, and use the black C-clips to secure. Confirm all teeth on the C-clips lock in securely.
- Gently pull the bypass valve open again, carefullt introducing water back into the softener. Check periodically over the next few hours for an leaks at the connection points (bypass valve and tank neck).

To Robert, Richard, and Cynthia- WARRANTY TEAM.
My husband tried to trouble shoot the water softener and unable to. He is not a professional plumber nor even a handyman to do these procedures. What you are asking is so complicated that a plumber can only do.
Please send us your RHEEM plumber at my home to troubleshoot. We cannot follow the instructions, TOO COMPLICATED. Do you ask every owner to do these things?
Please send us your RHEEM plumber. Our water softener is still UNDER WARRANTY and running out of time.
Thank you
